In response to widespread allegations of fee overcharging in private and self‐financing colleges, the president of the Association of Self‑Financing Arts, Science and Management Colleges of Tamil Nadu stated that member institutions allow free download of application forms and only collect course fees at submission, thereby deflecting claims of excess fee collection.

On February 20, 2025, ASFASM submitted a representation to Justice R. Pongiappan, Chairman of the Committee for Fees Fixation, urging for a flexible fee-setting regime that accounts for regional disparities and institutional financial viability. The proposal includes differentiated fee structures for accredited institutions, exemption from processing fees, and mandates for directing scholarship funds to SC/ST and first-generation students, aiming to sustain self-financing arts and science colleges, particularly in rural areas.

The Association of Self-Financing Arts, Science and Management Colleges of Tamil Nadu filed a writ petition in the Madras High Court contesting an August 31 government order that established a fee fixation committee. The association argues that the order is vague, lacks clear guidelines, and permits the arbitrary exercise of power.
