A committee including professors from Anna University was formed to assess the potential re-opening of Vedanta’s Sterlite plant in Thoothukudi. This move comes amid opposition by PUCL, which warned that the plant’s reactivation could pose public health risks.

Following a recent sexual assault incident on campus, Anna University, in coordination with the Tamil Nadu Higher Education Minister, has established a separate committee including senior faculty, women members, and student representatives to investigate the case. The university is also enhancing security measures by enforcing mandatory ID checks for visitors, photographing vehicles, removing overgrown shrubbery, and installing additional streetlights to protect vulnerable students.

The Madras High Court took suo motu cognizance of the Anna University sexual assault case, directing the state to explain its investigation. The case has raised serious concerns regarding campus security, breaches of victim privacy, and the possible influence of political connections on the investigation.
