USA Fencing has come under scrutiny after allowing a biological male to compete against women in fencing events. The decision, reported by Fox News amid broader controversy over transgender athlete participation following President Trump’s executive order, is seen as a stand in support of transgender inclusion and civil rights.

USA Fencing, along with its coach and an associated club, is facing federal court over allegations related to sexual abuse. The case centers on the claim that the organization waived its arbitration rights by enforcing a membership contract clause, thereby undermining protections for vulnerable individuals.

A federal lawsuit alleges that USA Fencing failed to protect a Tennessee teen from sexual abuse over a two‐year period by a coach, raising serious concerns about its safeguarding practices and overall ethical responsibility.

Following the USOPC audit, USA Fencing has taken steps to improve transparency and accountability by hiring a full-time compliance manager, updating its Complaint and Hearing Procedures Policy, and establishing a Grievance and Disciplinary Committee (approved on February 16, 2023).

USA Fencing has publicly shared the findings of a year-long USOPC compliance investigation concerning its governance, grievance procedures, leadership conflicts, and operational performance. In response, the organization outlined four key findings and three formal recommendations, committing to increased transparency and enhanced policies. The announcement underscores USA Fencing’s commitment to reform and accountability, promising further audits and member feedback as part of its strategic plan.

USA Fencing underwent an external review by Praesidium which assessed its abuse prevention policies and procedures. The review recognized several effective measures – including comprehensive screening, mandatory training for staff with access to youth, and technology-enabled reporting systems – while also identifying areas for improvement such as enhanced reporting tools and additional educational measures. These findings highlight the organization’s commitment to safeguarding athletes and preventing abuse.
