Following the recent elections, the government has prioritized comprehensive reforms for DRDO, including restructuring internal management, transferring non-core laboratories to state governments, and establishing a Defence Technology Commission with enhanced oversight. DRDO leadership has actively engaged with government officials, aligning their proposals with the reform committee's recommendations for greater accountability and decentralized administration.

The Indian government has initiated a comprehensive review of DRDO operations, led by a nine-member committee, aiming to implement structural reforms including performance-linked incentives, reduction of bureaucratic control, and expansion of private sector integration amid declining R&D funding.

An expert committee led by PMO advisor Prof K Vijay Raghavan has proposed a major overhaul of DRDO, recommending a shift to 10 national labs and new test facilities to address longstanding cost and time overruns. While DRDO has agreed to about 60% of the reforms, it has opposed certain routes suggested by the committee, with final decisions now pending from the government.

DRDO has developed an indigenously built Mobile Surveillance System (MSS) featuring integrated radar and electro-optics. Designed for 24/7 surveillance across wide areas including borders and ports, the system was successfully trialed at Chennai Port Trust and demonstrated at Def Expo 2018, raising concerns about its potential use in broad surveillance practices.
